2018 Ford Explorer engine options and efficiency

When buying a crossover or an SUV, you want the best of all worlds. You want power under the hood, you want AWD, you want capability, and you still want it all to be efficient too. This sounds like the impossible dream, but with Ford, you’d be surprised what’s possible.

To start things off, the Ford Explorer has a total of three engines available. All of them are powerful and all of them are efficient, but let’s break down each one. The base model and the XLT both get a 3.5-liter V6 engine standard that’s good for 290 horsepower and 17-city mpg along with 24-highway mpg. This engine is also available as an option on the Limited trim.

Speaking of options, the standard engine on the Limited trim is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder which is optional on the base model and the XLT. This turbocharged engine delivers nearly the same horsepower at 280 but delivers greater efficiency with 19-city mpg along with 27-highway mpg.

Finally, the top Sport and Platinum trims both get a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that creates 365 horsepower. As these trims are only available in all-wheel drive, you can expect reduced efficiency, but not by much. These top trims are still capable of providing 16-city mpg and 22-highway mpg.

Speaking of all-wheel drive, did you know that every Explorer trim features all-wheel drive as at least an option? This means no matter where you find your sweet spot to be, you can get the AWD you need. On top of that, the Explorer also features all the available technology you could ever want with SYNC 3, SiriusXM satellite radio, active park assist, and more!
